Berkeley Economic Review is recruiting for Fall 2018! We are looking for students of all skill sets—be it in marketing, layout and design, research and editorial, peer review, professional development, or staff writing. The application can be found HERE.

Why Join Us?

As a member of Berkeley Economic Review, you will have the opportunity to learn about the inner workings of an academic economics journal, the only one at UC Berkeley. We are the premier journalistic outlet for undergraduate Cal students interested in pursuing a career or graduate degree in economics.

BER staff get in-depth experience with the process of economic research and learn about popular economic topics. While many in the journal edit and peer-review submissions from across the United States, most recently from UNC Chapel Hill, Columbia, and Harvard, many others are involved in the marketing and production of pieces written by BER staff. In short, Berkeley Economic Review is a platform for budding economists and those looking to gain writing, marketing, development, academic or statistical experience.

Departmental Openings

Layout and Design

The Layout and Design department leads the aesthetic choices for the club’s semesterly journal, website, and social media pages.  At the practical level, this means working with InDesign and Photoshop to lay out articles and graphics for the journal as well as for the club when needed. We have openings for Layout Editors / Layout Artists for students interested in graphic design.

Marketing and Acquisitions

The role of the Marketing and Acquisitions department is to acquire undergraduate research paper submissions from around the world and expand BER’s online and social media presence, including working on data analytics projects to broaden readership. We have openings for Marketing Associates who are interested in business topics like search engine marketing and outreach. Additionally, we are recruiting a Webmaster to manage our WordPress website, as well as the Google analytics engine behind it. The goal of this position is to help increase user traffic to our website and our social media pages, as well as help the Marketing department create targeted strategies to increase readership. Experience with HTML, CSS, or Google Analytics App Engines recommended.

Peer Review

The Peer Review department selects research paper submissions from universities across the globe for publication in our journal. We have openings for Peer Reviewers who will digest undergraduate research from a diverse range of topics and intellectual origin outside of a classroom setting. A decent grade in an econometrics class is highly recommended for interested applicants.

Professional Development

Professional Development is a new addition to our club. This department will spearhead recruitment, organize academic and professional workshops, and lead social events in the club throughout the semester. Furthermore, this department will be overseeing BER’s relationship with companies and other institutions, including corporate and thinktank outreach institutions. Since this is a new department, we currently have openings for Professional Development Associates.

Research and Editorial

This department has openings for three positions: Qualitative Staff Writers produce opinion-based or feature-type research articles on a bi-weekly basis. Quantitative Staff Writers produce data-driven analysis articles once every four weeks. Assistant Editors edit assigned articles on the argumentative, statistical, and stylistic levels. They are also expected to edit peer-reviewed undergraduate papers, our annual essay-contest winners, and professor interviews that compose our peer-reviewed semesterly journal.
